Mountain Soursop (Annona montana)
From the Caribbean and northern South America
Best Growing Conditions:
- Prefers well-drained soil and full sun. More cold- and wind-tolerant than other
Annona species. Thrives in highland or foothill environments.
Characteristics:
- Medium-sized tree producing spiny green fruits with soft, fibrous pulp. Flavor is
tart and mildly sweet—less creamy than soursop (Annona muricata), but still edible. - Time to First Harvest: 3–5 years from seed.
- Mature Height: Can grow up to 20–40 feet.
Base Factors to Consider:
- Often used as rootstock for grafting soursop due to its hardiness.
- Fruits are less commercial but excellent for homestead use, teas, or medicinal applications.
- Tough and resilient tree suitable for challenging terrain.
Price for a 1-foot, ready-to-transplant seedling.
