Lychee (Litchi chinensis)
From Southern China
Best Growing Conditions:
- Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Benefits from dry winters for good fruiting.
Characteristics:
- Produces fragrant, sweet fruits with red, bumpy skin and translucent pulp.
- Time to First Harvest: 3–5 years from grafted plants; 8–10 years from seed.
- Mature Height: Typically 30–40 feet.
Base Factors to Consider:
- Beloved tropical fruit tree but sensitive to wind and cold.
- Seeds take longer to mature, so grafted or air-layered trees are often preferred.
- Great for mixed orchards or as a stand-alone fruit tree.
Price for a 1-foot, ready-to-transplant seedling. Because this is a dioecious tree, it needs to be grafted. Please allow up to two months.
